PSRA Best Front Garden 2020: Nominees Requested!

As you may have read in an earlier post, the St Stephens Parish in Bloom competition has been cancelled this year, but luckily we decided to go ahead with our annual local competition, which of course needs your input and help.

We are seeking your support in sending us nominations for the PSRA Best Front Garden 2020 Competition. This year has been a difficult one so far but many have spent  increased time in their gardens and, as these gardens have given us all such pleasure, it would be great to recognise them.

So please, do get in touch with your nominations, which can be your own garden, a friend’s, or even a garden you passed on your daily walk! Photos and garden’s address are key. Always check first with the garden owner, as they may not want the attention, however gorgeous their work may be.

The first prize will be awarded the 2020 Champion’s Cup and a £50 voucher from Burstons

Here’s the other prizes: 2nd Prize £25 Burstons gardening voucher; 3rd Prize Burstons £10 gardening voucher

The closing date for nominations will be 10 July 2020.

Please send the address and name of persons and ideally, attach a photo of the garden to:  events@psra.org.uk. Thank you in advance for your help and we look forward to hearing from you.

Cheeky photo of your Editrix’s front garden. It’s not nearly as well-kept as the other marvels around the Village, so enter yours!

Happy birthday, Raj!

One of the Village’s favourite persons, Raj who owns Twinsco Local, recently celebrated his birthday on Monday the 15th.

Our chair Joy baked him a cake for the occasion, and she and our Minutes Secretary Chris presented him with a card from all of us, and the cake Monday afternoon.

Here he is about to enjoy the cake.

Twinsco has been a rock to us and the whole community for many years, and has been indispensable during the pandemic and lockdown, providing hard to source food, toiletries and more, and generously allowing us a food donation drop off box.

Please give them your loyalty and patronage when you shop locally. https://www.twinsco.co.uk/ 69-71 Park St, Park Street, St Albans AL2 2PH

And once again, happy birthday Raj, from all of us at PSRA.

Fundraising Update

Our food bank fundraiser is still in full swing, and as always, we’re gratefully accepting donations.

Barbara Vernon held another cake sale on Saturday and raised £365.31 including some generous donations! Some local people gave books, DVD’s, etc to augment the stock and Heidi made some masks which proved popular. Thank you those of you who went and supported her.

In addition to donations raised by Barbara, on our JustGiving campaign and at our food drop-off point, Kris from Wenzel’s Bakers donated more cakes, artisan breads, salads which will go into our food bags.

We anticipate the need for assistance will continue through the summer, so we’re open to donations, as always. Currently 15 families receive parcels.

If you’re interested in donating food stuffs and essentials to our drop off box at Twinsco, here’s some things which are in need:

  • Squash
  • Alphabetti spaghetti
  • Shower gel
  • Kids biscuits

Ideally food donated at the drop off point at Twinsco should come from the store itself, to thank Raj and family for their help, but food bought from other shops or even things from your own stores are gratefully accepted. Please be careful with food from your home, and check the expiration dates, as we’ve had to reject such things as salad cream expiring in 2017, or even earlier!

First deadline met

Earlier this afternoon, we reached our initial £500 online goal for our food distribution fundraiser. Thank you, to everyone within our community who have helped us reach our goals, and more.

So now that we’ve seen what we can accomplish, we’ve upped the ante, and are now aiming for £1000 of donations on our JustGiving page. Why stop now when there’s so many families in need? An update is due to let everyone know about the progress of off-site donations, which are also significant!, but for now, we’re just basking in the joy of making our initial goal.

Thank you, one and all, and please share our good news, and our fundraiser page. https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/psrafood
