Identifying Air Pollution

MomJunction defines air pollution as:

contamination of air/atmosphere due to the presence of gases, fumes, particles and other harmful substances. These pollutants make the air harmful/unfit/unhealthy for all living beings (animals, plants and humans).

https://www.momjunction.com/articles/facts-about-pollution-for-kids_00381605/

As you can imagine, this is a big problem for everyone!

Conduct an experiment to find out if the air in your street is polluted by downloading the article, and then learn ways of reducing it.

Eat More Plants Colouring Page

Producing the food we eat accounts for over 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions. This carbon pollution mostly comes from the deforestation needed to grow food to feed livestock, although the process of producing meat has its own impact, too. Producing one joint of beef accounts for 85kg of carbon pollution – the same as flying from London to Paris.

COUNT US IN

Choosing plants over animals makes a big environmental impact, and it’s something we can all do to play our part.

Print this page, colour it in and send us a photo of your work for us to add to our web page!

Scavenger Hunts

These are good to do year-round, or at your birthday party, or this week during SustFest.

Neighbourhood Scavenger Hunt

This one’s from Playing Out St Albans and it’s lots of fun to do, and will keep you on your toes if you want to find all of the sustainable things on it.

AL2 Village Life Spotting Sheet

Here are some plants and mammals which are common in our Village, which we’ve seen on our walks.

How many can you find? Remember, observe, don’t touch. (Especially Stinging Nettles!)

Did you know you can make your own spotting sheet? Visit https://www.wildlifewatch.org.uk/things-do/get-started-your-spotter-sheets and create your own!

Spy a Duck or Two, or Three

One being you will see when you visit our Pits is a duck of some kind. Seriously, there’s no shortage of aquatic fowl in Park Street Village and its nearby surroundings!

Print Wildlife Watch’s Duck Finder and get to work spotting as many of these as you can.

More to learn on ducks in Herts here: https://www.hertswildlifetrust.org.uk/wildlife-explorer/birds/waterfowl

For a full list of 100+ events building environmental sustainability – across St Albans, Harpenden and the villages – visit https://sustfest.org/sustfest21-events-listings/

Here’s some family things happening elsewhere for the week: https://sustfest.org/kids/

And once again, thanks to  WildLife Watch, for its huge site, which provided so many of the projects we’ve featured. There truly is something for everyone there, so do spend a few hours there, and support them in any way you can.
